A Weekend of Speed, Skill & Spirit!
October 10-12, 2025 - Australian Ice Racing once again hosted the Australian Short Track Open at Melbourne’s O’Brien Icehouse, drawing over 130 skaters from across the globe. Competitors from New Zealand, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia joined the event, contributing to a highly competitive and spirited weekend of racing. The weekend produced strong results for WA, highlighted by a thrilling, hard-fought battle in which the WA Senior Men’s Relay Team successfully defended their national title, holding off strong challenges to remain on top — a testament to their skill, teamwork, and determination.
Chris Nicholson delivered an exceptional performance, taking first place overall in the Masters division. Andrew Saunders also topped his category, winning the Masters 45–49 age group.
Determination and consistency across multiple races, saw Rachel Tan claim second place in the Junior C Women’s division.
Newcomer Kalvin Heinz impressed with third place in the Senior Men’s division at his first Nationals, smashing his personal bests by several seconds after only weeks in the sport. Congratulations to all skaters who achieved personal bests — a reflection of hard work and steady progress.
Ahead of the competition, skaters took part in a three-day Development Camp led by Scott Weekes, focusing on technical skills and race strategy. The camp left athletes more confident and better prepared for competition.
The event continues to highlight the depth of talent and promising future of short track racing in Australia. Congratulations to all involved for a successful and inspiring event.
