New Coaches on Track!
On 6–7 September 2025, Western Australian Ice Racing (WAIR) hosted an intensive Level 1 Coach Accreditation Course, led by experienced coach educator and AIR Participation Officer, Scott Weekes. Traveling from New South Wales, Scott delivered the comprehensive program over two very full days.
The course combined classroom learning, land-based training, practical blade work, outdoor activities, and plenty of on-ice practice to provide a well-rounded foundation. In addition to coach development, volunteer officials received training in mat placement and rink safety — an important step toward creating safer and more effective training environments.
A big highlight was seeing our new coaches design and run their own drills on the ice, focusing on skill development, session goals, and team communication. Scott also covered the technical side of short track, from ISU rules and race planning to goal setting and athlete preparation.
At the end of the weekend, WAIR proudly welcomed four newly accredited Level 1 coaches:
- Chris Nicholson – NZ Olympian (Short Track & Cycling)
- Joshua Seah – Australian Junior National Team skater
- Jaiden Lannigan – Inline Level 1 Coach
- Andrew Saunders – Masters Division and Doctor
These coaches will play a vital role in expanding WAIR’s coaching capabilities, providing strong support for skaters at all levels — from beginners to high-performance athletes.
We extend our sincere thanks to Australian Ice Racing (AIR), the Play Well Grant, and Scott Weekes for making this important development opportunity possible. This weekend represents an exciting milestone for ice racing in WA, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact our new coaches will bring to the community.
